CFP: Mining Continents – LASA/AFRICA 2023 roundtable

Mining Continents: Connections and Comparisons between Africa and Latin America

We draw you attention on this interesting CFP:

Dear mining colleagues,

We (Duncan Money and Ángela Vergara) are putting together a roundtable on comparative mining histories of Latin America and Africa for LASA Africa 2023. This is a hybrid conference (Ghana/Virtual) and will take place on November 15-18, 2023 (we plan to be online). You can find more information about the conference (and the registration fees) on this site

Mining has been a central concern of scholars of both Africa and Latin America, yet with little overlap in the scholarship. For our proposed roundtable, “Mining Continents: Connections and Comparisons between Africa and Latin America,” we invite contributions on trans-continental connections and comparisons, and to reflect on what we can learn from case studies on both continents. Can we identify common histories and trajectories? There appear to be strong commonalities in dispossession, migration, labour, corporate structures, environmental impact, and the role of foreign capital.

We welcome contributions from across the humanities.

We will use the roundtable format to make it more engaging (so no paper but a conversation that we would structure around a few common questions distributed beforehand ).

If you are interested in joining the roundtable, please send us a brief summary (150 words) of your research interests no later than July 10th, 2023. The conference will be in English, but you can send us your summary in Spanish.

While you do not need to be a member of LASA to participate, you need to become a friend of LASA (a non-member free account) before we submit the panel (please let us know if you have any questions about this) >

We look forward to hearing from you,

Ángela and Duncan
